As much as RSS readers have and RSS feeds have gained popularity, a vast majority of people don’t want to take the pains of setting up their Google Reader account with the sites they want to follow.

Google Reader has released a cool experimental feature where a new user can browse through popular feeds as a slideshow in an attractive interface without curating their own Google reader account.

Current Google Reader users can use this new feature to browse through their own RSS feeds in a new unique way.

Google Reader Play is Google’s latest attempt at making Google Reader a fun web app to use for new and existing users.

In Google Reader Play, items are presented one at a time, and each item is big and full-screen. After you’ve read an item, just click the next arrow to move to the next one, or click any item on the filmstrip below to fast-forward. Of course, you can click the title or image of any item to go to the original version. And since so much of the good stuff online is visual, we automatically enlarge images and auto-play videos full-screen.

Plus, Reader Play has the smarts to adapt to your taste based on stuff you enjoy by clicking the like button. Kind of a StumbleUpon for RSS feeds. You can also choose categories and stream news from it.

If you already use Google Reader, you are probably familiar with Recommended Items section. Reader Play basically feeds off of the same technology to show you news in a different view.

Even if you don’t have a Google account, you can try out Google Reader Play. Of course, you can save feeds you like, star it, like it, etc., with a Google account.

I found it to be a little slow to load but it could be because Google just rolled it out. But, this could be a fun way of browsing for news just like how Feedly makes for a great Google Reader alternative interface.

I am still a hardcore Firefox fan but I just have been keeping my Firefox running swift with a select group of must-have Firefox add-ons. So, I took the time to see what new ones have sneaked into my browser and found a common theme – Tabs. So here we go.

  BarTab

  Do you keep a dozen tabs open and hate the loading time when you restart your browser? BarTab lets you keep all your tabs open and it loads only when you visit them. This is one of the best Firefox add-ons for tab happy Firefox users. I also use it for productivity by putting my Gmail tab to BarTab so I only check it at pre-assigned times and not any time I have a new mail.

• App Tabs

  Another tab related add-on I really like. You can pin certain tabs that you always use like Gmail, Google Reader, Facebook, etc can be pinned to the left side of the tabs with just the favicons. It is a feature planned for Firefox 4.0 but you can use it as an experimental add-on right now.

• Informational Tab
  This add-on provides thumbnail style preview for each tab, progress meter and indicate unread status.

• Fission

  Fission combines the address bar and progress meter like you would have seen in Safari browser. This really makes for a nice visual effect while the page is loading.

• Coral IE Tab

  An enhanced version of IE Tab which enables you to use the embedded IE engine within tabs of Mozilla Firefox. It supports Adblock Plus in IE, and can sync cookies between IE and Firefox.

Blog Signature ID makes it easy to leave comments on blogs by automatically filling in your profile information in the comment fields for you.

I have heard great things about Spotify but  it isn’t yet available in the United States.

I just came across another extremely promising music service – Grooveshark.

Grooveshark gives you a way to begin searching for music, create playlists, upload your own music, change themes and listen to music from a really cool web interface.

You can browse through different bands, artists and songs and play the music. You can do all these without even creating an account. You could upload music and access lot more features with a account though.

You can create Playlists and add songs, artists, albums to the playlists.

Grooveshark also comes with social features. You can email a link to your friends from the queue or even share it in Facebook and Twitter.

The upload feature also works great with access to your uploaded music wherever you have an Internet connection.

Grooveshark is free for the ad-supported version or you can pay to become an ad-free VIP membership for $3/month.

Grooveshark offers music discovery feature where you can vote a song up or down and find related songs. If you really like a song, you can find links to buy the song from iTunes or Amazon right from Grooveshark.

Grooveshark also has some cool feature for bands and musicians with analytics, etc.

Grooveshark is more accessible with a Google Chrome extension, a WordPress plugin and a Facebook app.

BuddyPress reached version 1.0 last year but it was friendly only with the multi-use version of WordPress – WordPress MU. Those with single installations of WordPress, like myself, were unable to use BuddyPress with the same ease as WPMU users.

With the release of BuddyPress 1.2, single installations of WordPress can also use BuddyPress now for their forum needs.

We can install BuddyPress as just a plugin from within the WordPress installation. BuddyPress makes it very easy to integrate a forum in an existing WordPress blog.

And you can share your existing WordPress blog user base across your forum too, just like that. If you had tried to integrate user login with forum software like PHPbb or the like you might already know how painful that is.

BuddyPress makes that a breeze. But, there was one catch. BuddyPress comes with it’s own default theme and most WordPress single installation blogs already have their own themes.

The good news is that, Andy Peatling, founder and lead developer of BuddyPress has created a WordPress plugin – BuddyPress Template Pack.

First thing I noticed was that any buzz update was coming to my Gmail inbox.

No, no, no, no. I am trying to do a ‘Inbox Zero’ by archiving all emails and just keep the ones that need an action in my inbox.

Here is how you hide the Buzz updates from cluttering your Gmail inbox.

1. Create a filter
2. Enter “label:buzz” in the “Has the words’ field
3. Check ‘Skip the inbox” (Archive) field
4. Create the filter

Google Buzz updates are automatically labeled as ‘buzz’ so you just need a filter to skip the inbox.

More Buzz Hacks

• If you still don’t have Buzz in your Gmail, you can easily trick your browser to think it’s a mobile browser and access Google Buzz.
  - Install User Agent Switcher Firefox add-on and restart Firefox
  - Go to: Tools –> Default User Agent –> iPhone 3.0
  - Go to: http://google.com/buzz
• Gmail keyboard shortcuts like ‘k’,’j’ works in Google buzz to navigate between messages.

After a day of using it, my take away is that Google Buzz badly needs lists or groups like Facebook and Twitter and the ability to post stuff for certain groups.

Half my family and friends don’t care about the stuff I talk with my social networking peeps and vice versa.

I just finished an audiobook called The Scarecrow via Audible and it was a good fiction.

But, this Wired article is so much more real and in some ways insane if you think about the silent under the radar attacks that’s going on against corporations around the world.

I highly recommend you read the whole article at Wired. But this what I came away with after reading it.

• Advanced Persistent Threat (APT) – A new form of attack that can lay dormant in a corporate network for months even a year before coming alive and avoid detection.
• APT like data theft unlike other threats which target financial and identity theft
• No one is immune to APT attackers – including defense contractors and government agencies
• APT attacks are sophisticated but initial entry is very simple using social engineering
• Spear-phishing attacks target key executives, assistants, researchers and admins who have access to sensitive information
• Also use 2 other methods of infection – process injections and stub malware
• They use very hard to detect ways of sending data home – gather data in a staging server, slice the data into small rare packets, sometimes even using customized packers, packets with spoofed headers or even use the SSL port with a custom protocol.
• APT victims can only hope for a 3-6 months window before the attackers return

After reading this article, I came away with a sobering feeling of the always connected to the Internet we live in now.

Google came out and openly said that they were hacked but many of the major corporations didn’t.

I rarely wear a tin foil hat but sometimes stuff like this makes you wonder.

Captcha is that squiggly words/numbers that some sites ask you to enter to confirm you are indeed a human and not some bot trying to spam a website comment system or registration system.

reCAPTCHA was a free captcha service that had a dual purpose of fighting spam as well as the data collected with the service was used to digitize books and newspapers.

Google obviously has great interest in digitizing books and newspapers and this was a perfect fit for them and so reCAPTCHA was acquired.

Google has made the reCAPTCHA service available again for publishers to use in their own hosted websites. reCAPTCHA is available for many platforms including WordPress, Drupal, Joomla and PHP.

You have to sign up for an account here first.

Instead of trying to write your spam filter, you can offload your site’s spam filtering efforts to Google via reCAPTCHA.

It is kind of poetic that the same person who first unlocked the iPhone has turned his sights on Sony Playstion 3.

George Hotz has successfully found an exploit in Playstation 3 and has released it to the world.

In the interest of openness, I’ve decided to release the exploit. Hopefully, this will ignite the PS3 scene, and you will organize and figure out how to use this to do practical things, like the iPhone when jailbreaks were first released. I have a life to get back to and can’t keep working on this all day and night.

Please document your findings on the psDevWiki. They have been a great resource so far, and with the power this exploit gives, opens tons of new stuff to document. I’d like to see the missing HV calls filled in, nice memory maps, the boot chain better documented, and progress on a 3D GPU driver. And of course, the search for a software exploit.

Unfortunately, not all websites in the Internet have RSS feeds. There have been many webpage monitoring services that will notify you when a webpage you are watching changes or updates.

Google Reader can now track changes to any web page even if there isn’t a RSS feed available. You can add any website URL to the ‘Add a subscription’ box in Google Reader. If it can’t detect a RSS feed, Google Reader will prompt and ask you if you want to ‘Create a Feed’ for this page.

Google Reader will periodically visit that page and check for changes and publish any changes in the custom feed you created for the page.

This is a great way to follow up on changes to web pages you are interested in, as a reader.

If you are a publisher and you intentionally don’t provide RSS feeds for parts of your site and don’t want Google to crawl it, you can use this link to opt-out.

Google Reader has been adding little useful features lately and this is definitely another step in the right direction.
