WePad – iPad Alternative from Germany

Apple iPad has been selling like hotcakes and in fact the iPad 3G version is due to come out this week. We looked at an iPad – Notion Ink’s ADAM – alternative earlier and this is the second one in that series.

No offense to Apple iPad owners, we dedicate a whole section in our Top iPhone Resource site for iPad news.

WePad Tablet

WePad tablet computer from Germany has an interesting concept. Check out their opening lines which takes a direct hit at Apple.

Wepad is based on Android and Linux and has some impressive hardware specifications. In fact, you can see how WePad compares with Apple iPad in a chart provided conveniently by Wepad people.

WePad hopes to stand out from the competitors with their interactive reading experience from WeMagazine ePublishing Open Platform.

Most of the website besides the WePad page is in German so I wasn’t able to gather more information about the background of the company behind WePad. If anyone fluent in German does so, please leave your thoughts in the comments.

Is WePad the iPad Killer?

Like the proverbial ‘iPhone killer’ now everyone is starting to talk about a iPad killer. Again, I really really like that Apple isn’t the only one making tablet computers and that there are several good competitors coming out.

However, Apple has an unique advantage and headstart over the others with the App Store ecosystem with over 180,000 apps and the iTunes managing the media delivery to the tablet.

I am excited that Android’s app store is catching up steadily and look forward to more Android based tablets bringing more choices to us, consumers.
