If you are a AT&T DSL subscriber like me with a 3 mbps or higher speed connection, you can get free wi-fi access to over 10,000 hotspots in US. For lower speed subscribers it costs $1.99 for unlimited access which isn’t bad if you travel a lot.
This is especially good news for people who just bought an Apple iPhone with AT&T and already have AT&T DSL. AT&T’s EDGE network crashed earlier this week and when it works it is just a tad faster than dialup. With iPhone’s Wi-Fi capability, it just becomes easier for AT&T DSL subscribers to get free Wi-Fi access when they are on the move.
Good move by AT&T and they might as well make it free to all their DSL subscribers regardless of their subscription tier. GigaOM suggests that AT&T should provide free Wi-Fi to all iPhone customers which might ease the load on their EDGE network.

This is an interesting concept. I’m happy to be rid of AT&T finally after 5 years of problems, but I hope Sprint goes with something like this in the near future.

AT&T wasn’t the greatest. I kinda got into AT&T after they acquired Cingular and haven’t found a better option for Internet where I live. Sprint was my first cell phone provider and with the Nextel acquisition they should be better placed now.

I’m wondering if I will be able to use this, seeing as AT&T bought out my previous DSL provider not long ago.

You probably could, Jake. They are probably waiting for you to call them to let you know.

What a great bit of information. I just recently switched from Comcast ( the DEVIL
) to AT&T.

Welcome to ShanKri-la with this being your first comment here, Terry!
AT&T has been good for me over the last few years and I guess it depends which area you are in to measure the level of service! I have had Comcast before but can’t remember having any trouble with them either. May be I am just easy.

Sounds like a great idea free wifi if you subscribe to att. Only problem is they do not offer dsl in my area. They where one fo the only phone services for a long time now we have mutiple ones. Now i can get dsl from cable satellite and verizon and few other companies but not at@t seems weird they have been around longer than anyone else.
